Henderson Street, Bridge of Allan

Location

Bridge of Allan is a picturesque Victorian spa town on the outskirts of Stirling.

It began life as a small rural village. Copper was mined in the wooded hills above the town as early as the 16th century and at intervals right up to 1807. In the 18th century two more shafts were created to drain spring water from the mine and this mineralised water soon attracted large numbers of people who came to "take the waters" due to its alleged healing powers. This eventually led to the development of the spa and the growth of the village.

Robert Louis Stevenson visited Bridge of Allan every summer for more than twenty years and included the route of the Darn Walk in his novel Kidnapped. A cave by the river bank is said to be the original of Ben Gunn's cave in Treasure Island.

Chopin also spent some time in one of the local landowner's home teaching piano. And on a more modern note, the Beatles played in the Museum Hall before they hit the big time!

Bridge of Allan is now a bustling small town with many individual shops and eating places and varied attractions to visit. There are sports facilities and a picturesque nine hole golf course on the hill above the town.

Stirling University is on the outskirts of the town and has a thriving theatre in the centre of the campus.
