Alloa
Alloa is a town bounded on the north and west by the River Devon and on the
south by the River Forth. It is the adminstrative and commercial centre of Clackmannanshire and is located about 7 miles east
of Stirling.
Alloa in terms of location is hard to beat, offering a suburban lifestyle which
is also within commuting distance to four of Scotland's six cities, Stirling, Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The passenger
rail link to Stirling will be opening in May 2008 and there is substantial regeneration work in progress.
The settlement developed at a ford and ferry crossing defended in medieval times by Alloa Tower which was built on land
aquired by the Erskine family around 1360. Restored in the 1990s, Alloa Tower is the oldest building in Alloa and one of the
largest surviving tower houses in Scotland.
